The Hair of The Dog

As You May Recall,

I have something of a fascination with Idioms.  You know, those expressions that are near ancient in origin, which we toss out often enough to assure their permanence in the rhelms of common language.  And yet, when we take a moment to think about what it is we’re actually saying, uh well, What actually are we…

We Are at War!

“I know it’s hard to understand what it is like to be persecuted.” The minister began as he quietly cleared his throat. “We live in a society that is safe and secure and we have homes and jobs.”

This was the second time in two months I had heard this kind of message from clergy. I had to literally hold myself in the pew to keep from running to the front of the sanctuary and telling each pastor they were wrong! We are at War!

            Lack of understanding about…

Luke 17:26 - Days of Noah

I'm writing a new horror story - and it's my best yet. I call it "Our Lord Weathercock" but I'm thinking of changing it to "The Midwestern Days of Noah." Of course, the horrid tale is set in Wister Town, Wisconsin and I continue exploiting and expanding the mythology documented in depth with my…

Watch Your Mouth! A look at Violence in Contemporary Fantasy

Hello, everyone! As this is my first post of the new year, I thought I would spice things up a bit. For starters, this week’s topic deals with the more violent nature of contemporary fantasy. And secondly, I have a surprise guest who will offer her insights on the matter.

There is no use mincing words. When it comes to fantasy, some of us like it rough. Recently, we have seen an emergence in the more gritty types of fantasy. The…

Llumina is Dead to Me

In case anyone wonders, Llumina is a Print on Demand (POD) book publisher in Florida. I had self-published half the second revision of my Pazuzu story with Llumina at the beginning of 2010. That revision of the book didn't sell and I couldn't get Pazuzu in brick-and-mortar stores because none of the retailers I approached…

Jack Whitsel has placed the epic fantasy Shades of Virtue with Twilight Times Books. Shades of Virtue is the second book in the Dragon Rising series.

In Shades of Virtue, nearly two years have passed since the Harhn incursion. While the Hugue recovers from the devastation, the Order of the Secret Throne resumes their agenda. Lord Yannic and his armies march the breadth of the Vol Thaldane to rally the divided human fiefdoms into the new…

My Life For Sale

MY LIFE FOR SALE

I can't say I knew what to expect with any certainly since I've never had a book published before now.  Still, I did read, research, take notes, make lists, and plan plans.  I didn't fall into anything blindly, but even so, there were, and continue to be, plenty of surprises.

Comrades of The Pen

Do you recall your very first best friend?  How about your first writing  friend? The one you excitedly shared your aspirations with, secure in knowing your heart's desire was completely safe and theft proof in the vault, because your best writing friend shared the inherent angst, struggle, and unsurpassed joy of putting words on paper.

Watching Yourself a Little to Closely

Just because you can isn't always the best reason for doing something. Well, really, it's no reason at all.  And when the "something" involves checking on yourself, it's all to easy to become addicted.  And addiction is rarely a pretty thing.

Ah, but it all starts so innocently:

Okay, so you have a new book, website, blog -- feel free to fill in the blank here.  And, yes, absolutely, it's all so exciting.  You've got your…

A Novel Road Trip

When I first learned about BookCrossing I was instantly enamored of the concept.  And for several months now, the intention to send my novel, The Secret of Lies, out on a road trip has been steadily simmering, patiently awaiting something of an out-of-the-ordinary opportunity to hit the road. And so, at long last, said moment has arrived, and on Saturday, April… Continue
