It's a mixed bag of treats, good and bad.

LIFE IS FULL OF SURPRISES

For example, the fact I’m still here, alive, is actually a surprise to me.

In my youth I seldom gave it a great deal of thought, but even then I would’ve bet money I’d never see a 50th birthday. Man! Fifty! That’s seriously old, you know? Yet, I made it.

I can recall a certain dread at the idea of hitting forty. Definitely not a member of the “Pepsi…

Our veterans are still at war. Now they are fighting for their dignity.

April 1 was hard. The extreme "high" at finally having my book in my hands and the emotionally pulverized "low" of spending 2.5 hours ($150 USD in MX phone charges) calling different VA facilities to try to get my husband, Don, an appointment. I learned that: "It takes 5 to 6 months" they said, "If you stop at an emergency room, without our permission, you are responsible for the charges," made me feel like a ping-pong ball. I was informed that if I drive 650 miles to the border, "Usually… Continue

Doing the right thing. It doesn't get any better than that.

SOMEONE SMEARED SOME DÉJÀ ON MY VU

There’s a unique feeling to be enjoyed when we do something right. Properly. The way we know it should be done. It’s an inner satisfaction that just feels good. Often we don’t even need to share the news to feel the full benefit of it. Just knowing we’ve nailed that sucker, done it the way it should be, with t’s crossed and i’s dotted properly, can be all we need.

That inner…

A Novel Road Trip

When I first learned about BookCrossing I was instantly enamored of the concept.  And for several months now, the intention to send my novel, The Secret of Lies, out on a road trip has been steadily simmering, patiently awaiting something of an out-of-the-ordinary opportunity to hit the road. And so, at long last, said moment has arrived, and on Saturday, April… Continue

Humans have a "gelding" group, of a sort.

GELDINGS

This certainly won’t come across as a Stop the presses! moment for most of you, but today I was sharing a thought with a friend. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know. “Really, Bill?” you say in mock amazement, (especially Adam). “I’ll be darned! When did you start doing that?”

Roughly sixty seconds after I was out of the womb. There. Ya happy now?

Sheesh!

In any…

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY

You only have power over people as long as you don't take everything away from them.  But when you've robbed a man of everything, he's no longer in your power - he's free again.

If you want to know the difference between a writer and an author, contact me and I'll explain it.

A ROCK STAR? ME?

Those of you who “know me”, as opposed to just knowing of me or having a general idea who I am, will know I’m not seeking fame. Not really. Yes, to a brief extent, I do want to be known as a great author. I’ve had some great authors, among them Dennis Lynds, who wrote as Michael Collins, say I’m a storyteller. I take…

Queen for A Day

When I was in 6th grade at Alden Place school in Millbrook New York, I won 1st place for the best costume at the Girl Scouts Halloween party. It's one of those cherished memories that, incredibly, has actually remained intact inside a head that's become host to an increasingly faulty… Continue

Things like this used to get me down. Not any longer.

WHAT? ME WORRY?

Just as I now have that nearly magical ability to see both sides of the matter, having been a “homed” guy for so many years, then a homeless guy, and now “homed” again, I can speak from the same authority on worry. Believe me, I became a master at the tactic.

For oh, so many years I was the poster boy for that old expression, “If it wasn’t for bad luck, I wouldn’t have any.” I was pretty much joined at the…
