A swinging pendulum can be deadly.

Unions … no longer a good idea at allYeah, I get it. There are valid arguments on both sides.1 … “We’ve gotta have unions or they’ll run us over!”2 … “Not in my business! I’ll lock the damned doors first!”This post has been nagging at me to be written for over a week. I’ve kept two small boxes out here on the couch as reminders. So, being honest enough to admit my point of view right up front, I hate unions. I grew up in Lansing, Michigan. For most of my life that city had only two major…See More

Five minutes is often longer than many people spend making love.

Can you wait five minutes? That’s not a very long time. The average white male in the United States lives 75.6 years, 5.2 years less than the average white woman. It’s the reason we have so many of those nasty cats. Her man dies first, so the woman needs someone to bitch and carp at the rest of the trip. Dogs won’t put up with it.Still, there are 288 segments five minutes long in every day, so the average guy will still have 7,947,072 chunks of time that long in his life. Since women live 7%…See More

The many facets of having cancer are not all readily apparent.

Cancer survivors, a group of very tired peopleThat group, cancer survivors, now includes me … as I understand it. Apparently I can keep the “title” unless-until I become a dead guy. The newspaper article you’ll see by clicking the link lists some of the multitude of problems we face. Thankfully, I don’t suffer depression or any worry about the cancer…See More

They have to get out of my way again.

I’m the same size I was back thenOnly now, it makes a difference. I was walking into an aisle at CVS Pharmacy to pick up more dope, as I do a few times every month. Cancer’s no damned fun, and getting old isn’t exactly a burst of glee, either. A woman was almost out of the aisle as I approached, but she saw me coming. She moved to her right and turned sideways to give me more room.Nothing unusual about that. It’s been happening for most of my life, beginning when I was a teenager. At age fifteen…See More

Thankfully, there are some of us who just "get it".

Doing her partIt first began as a trickle, but the personal rewards for me are picking up steam now and the growing volume is very pleasurable. What you’ll read below is a minimally edited e-mail from a blog subscriber, Maxine. She lives in Florida and can only be considered “well off” if she’s compared to someone like me, “no pot, no window”.All due to you, my dear, I am much more conscious of the homeless. I believe the homeless are like all the rest of the population, some you find endearing…See More

Most people think they're smarter than dogs. As if!

Dogs have better habits than we doConfessing everything up front for those of you who haven’t heard it from me before, I like dogs a helluva lot more than I like people. I suppose first place on the “reason why list” goes to their honesty. If a dog likes you, he shows it. If he doesn’t like you, same story. He’s not gonna pretend you’re a buddy to your face and growl about you behind your back. You get the plain, unvarnished truth up front. His attitude is, “deal with it”.Plus, in many ways,…See More

Abject fear is the fuel that drives heroism.

It would be nice to die as a heroSomething similar was mentioned in last Sunday’s issue of the San Diego Union-Tribune in one of many articles about Junior Seau, the legendary former Chargers linebacker who committed suicide on May 2nd. He was called a hero by many people. In the end, he wasn’t one. What he did was foolish, and I can say so based on having attempted it myself in 2004 to avoid living as a homeless man. My suicide attempt didn’t come off successfully, but being homeless sure…See More

Sometimes I really piss me off

It’s actually kind of nice to hear it said that way. For so many years I’ve heard it said with “you” in place of the “I” and it sounds different enough like this to make it better, somehow.

Still, I’m now noticing some of the things I do and they’re annoying. What’s worse is these are new things, stuff others never got a…

The Dead Pool

That’s the title of the last of the “Dirty Harry” movies with Clint Eastwood. The Dead Pool has a cast of “not-yet-famous” actors, the characters played by Liam Neeson, Patricia Clarkson and Jim Carrey. That kind of movie was my favorite brand for many years. After a week of pressure in my business and…

Hi Bill,

Am I late answering you or what? I'm sorry.  I've been busy with writing. Wish I could keep up with all these forums because it's nice to get to know authors, writers and readers.

Thank you again sir! I appreciate the kudos there! I normally don't chit-chat much with people on this site, but for some reason I felt 'moved' to send you a comment. My self-imposed hermit type style of living causes me to reach out sometimes just to make sure there are people still out there in the world. . . . .
