Mental illness to me has had a triangle affect on me just like many others. Sustance abuse and homelessness in many cases follow diagnosis or is not discovered until many years later. My book series, 'The City of Garden Collection' is a ten year case study on how these conditions had and will have in the City of Victoria, BC, Canada.

Mental health and addiction - A social disease.

As devastating as these illnesses are to the individual and their family or social circle, they have a combined significant impact on our society. Health care costs rise, crime hieghtens, emergency service waitring lists are long and frustrating. Warehousing the mentally ill and addicted in jails where there is no medical facility to treat them properly is inhumane and unforgiving to punish an illness. What is seen on the street of a few gives people the impression that they are all like that. Discrimination, stigma and unwarranted fears of the mentally ill, addicted and homeless against those inflicted is shameful and disgusting.

Being inflicted with a mental illness and or addiction gathers momentum paving a way to homelessness and destitution. Many family's abort their newly diagnosed member to fend for themselves with no support. Usually, they have already lost their job and was met with financial devastion. They lose their house, car, and pride. In a very short time they can be on the top of the world and in the next moment find themselves sleeping in a cardboard box on the street.

If they were not addicted to anything before hitting the streets, this has many times provoked this activity flourish thus numbing the inner pain and help warm the body from the elements. Prositution, muggings, and drug activities corrupt cities around the world.

If we would take a second look at the situation, we would see that it does not have to be that way at all. Implementing low income housing, increase social assistance benifits, councilling, fast and complete medical treatment and support, advocacy and harm reduction would save taxpayers millions of dollars as well as making considerable progress helping those in need. By helping others, we also help ourselves.

Is this and illness of the body or the minds of an uneducated society?

Hi, folks -

My specialty is Physician Misbehavior. I research, investigate, speak & write about this very curious aspect of our culture. Did you know, for example, that 2,490 doctors were convicted of serious misbehavior, in 2009 alone? Are you aware that the U.S. government directed the establishment of an organization called the National Practitioner Data Bank, specifically to track "Dangerous" or "Questionable" physicians? Do you know how many there are in their files? 237,000 - since 1985.

My intent is to educate, because very, very few of us get to go through life without needing medical care. So my purpose in relating my findings are to help make you - an iFOGO member - a wiser health-care consumer. Here are a few more startling tidbits, and then I'll let you go:

More Doctors have been serial killers, than any other specific profession.

The infamous "Anthrax Terrorist 7 years ago? A doctor.

The worst child rapist in U.S. history? A doctor.

2 of the last three mass-shootings in America? Doctors.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice annual report, Medical Fraud costs the U.S. taxpayers $500 Billion per year in law enforcement expenses. No other profession generates such waste.

So what can you do? Well, the internet is a modern miracle. Use it to learn all you can about your own physician. Use it to contact your state senators, and tell them we need far greater transparency in physician histories. Visit websites such as: www.MedicalManiacs.com to get informed.

And, if you're so inclined, you're welcome to use the internet to order a copy of America's Dumbest Doctors: Ever wonder about yours? It's a great way to laugh and learn at the same time.

Thanks for listening, and thank you for being authors.
